Lafayette Overcomes 18-Point Deficit, Falls Short in Rivalry 249

Leopards return to Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Caleb Williams scored a team-high 18-points to pace men's basketball at Lehigh in Saturday's 64-59 outcome.

Mark Butler (14) and Shareef Jackson (13) also ended the evening in double figures through a heated Rivalry contest in Stabler Arena.

Lafayette kicked off the first half of the initial Rivalry meeting by taking 10-3 lead at 15:45. Williams and Christian Humphrey-Rembert each contributed four points.

The Mountain Hawks retaliated over a seven-minute period, stealing a 20-17 advantage by 6:30. The 17-7 run was fueled by a trio of 3-pointers.

At the four-minute mark, Lehigh continued to attack the rim and extend its lead to 12, 31-19. Andrew Urosevic had seven points in the spurt, as the hosts netted a perfect three attempts from the floor, beyond the arc and at the line.

Lehigh put up a 38-22 front at the halftime break.

The Leopards took initiative coming out of the locker room, despite the 43-26 gap (15:23). Lafayette crafted a 19-9 stretch to shorten the margin to seven, 52-45, by the six-minute mark. Williams added seven points as the squad knocked down 6-of-9 from the floor.

By 3:29, the Maroon and White honed in on Lehigh, trailing by just two points, 54-52, thanks to a 3-pointer by Williams.

The momentum swung back towards the Mountain Hawks, who kept ahead 62-57 with hot shooting at 1:10. Hank Alvey converted a pair of free throws and added a pair of layups for the hosts.

Down 62-59 in the final 18 seconds, the Leopards gained possession and called a timeout to draw up one final play, looking for a game-tying 3-pointer. Butler inbounded the ball to Andrew Phillips, whose shot hit just off the right side of the rim at the buzzer.

Nasir Whitlock led the opponents with 20 points and three assists, as the Mountain Hawks recorded 47 percent from long range compared to Lafayette's 24 percent.

Next up, the Leopards host Bucknell on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Monday night, but was postponed due to the potential of incoming inclement weather.
