GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The women's and men's cross country teams earned second and sixth at the annual Aubrey Shenk Invitational on Saturday morning. Juniors Anya Kazemi and Kendall Collier and freshman Hudson Schunk paced the Leopards for the fourth meet in a row, earning third, eighth and ninth, respectively, out of more than 400 competitors in each race.
For the women, Kazemi secured third with a final time of 21:16.1. Collier followed shortly after at 21:28.5 for an eighth-place finish. Rounding out Lafayette's top five finishers were seniors Ava Severino in 13th (21:48.8) and Bridget Shaver in 22nd (22:02.2) and junior Alivia Bear in 23rd (22:02.7).
"Our top three have done an excellent job of establishing themselves in the front of races this year. Anya, Kendall, and Ava really set the tone for the team today," associate head coach Anthony Dentino acknowledged. "Our pack from runners 4-10 also executed a great race behind them. We emphasized this group tightening the gaps between our third and fifth through seventh runners, and today was our closest team spread all year. These were also our fastest one through five and one through seven averages in school history, which is a great place to be as we prepare for the Patriot League Championships in two weeks."
On the men's side, Schunk placed ninth with a final time of 24:54.3. The Leopards' top five finishers also included junior Alec Miner in 17th (25:17.2), sophomore Ethan Buck in 35th (25:40.7) and freshmen Brandon Williams and Oliver Samuel in 38th (25:45.5) and 56th (26:00.5), respectively.
"Our men continue to take great steps in their long term development," Dentino said. "Hudson breaking 25:00 is a fantastic effort, particularly from a freshman, and to have three other freshmen inside the top seven is extremely encouraging. Despite having a limited cross country background, Alec has worked very hard to be a steady performer for us and a huge part of our success today. Our two sophomore men in the lineup, Ethan and Thatcher, also had huge breakthrough performances that can hopefully spur them on to even more success as we prepare for Patriot Leagues."
Carter Brotherton of Johns Hopkins and Tommy Crum of Shippensburg enjoyed the individual victories.
The Maroon and White will wrap up the regular season at the Patriot League Championships hosted by Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m.
