EASTON, Pa.-Â No. 19 Lafayette outlasted American in shootouts, 1-0, to continue to an eight-game win streak on Friday evening at Rappolt Field. The Leopards improved to a 9-1 (3-0 PL) record, holding all three league opponents scoreless in regulation this season.
The opening half saw the most action inside both circles with Lafayette taking four shots compared to American's six attempts on goal. The Maroon and White secured two corners in the first half.
Neither team found the net in the remainder of regulation as most of the plays centered around the midfield edges and tactical outletting by the defensive units.
The Eagles recorded the only shot and penalty corner of the 15-minute sudden-victory overtime period, yet the game remained scoreless.
Sophomore
Campbell Lemmink entered the cage for Lafayette thereafter to serve as the goalkeeper for shootouts. Teagan Harmon remained on the field for American's squad.
In the 1v1's,
Stella Malinowski and
Lena Thedrian were selected first for the hosts and each made their tallies. Ashley Huddleston scored for the Eagles before her teammate Emilia Winkler was stopped by Lemmink. Lafayette's
Rosalie van Gool and American's Sam Kockx were both denied by the opposing keepers.
Lea Good of the Maroon and White executed her shootout attempt perfectly, putting the Leopards up 3-1.
In the final shootout, American's Nora Tromble charged to the far left of the cage. The opponent attempted to pull the ball back towards the center when close to the baseline, but was halted by the swing of Lemmink's leg pads. The Leopard squad rushed the field, engrossing Lemmink in a dogpile of success after the final whistle.
For the first time in eight years, Lafayette declared victory against American in the regular season by a final score of 1-0.
American held the advantage in total shots (7-5) with penalty corners tied at two apiece overall.
In regulation and overtime, Lafayette's junior goalkeeper
Addison Kahn made four saves. Her Eagle counterpart, Harmon, made two saves on the field.
Next up, the Leopards travel to Penn State on Sunday at noon.
