Leopards’ Offense Stifled by Michigan in Houston Invitational

Lafayette will turn its attention to it second weekend of play, traveling to UNC-Wilmington

HOUSTON, Texas – Lafayette softball struggled to find its offensive rhythm Sunday morning, falling 9-0 to Michigan in a five-inning contest at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Michigan's Erin Hoehn held the Leopards to one hit over five scoreless innings. That lone hit came in the third inning when Caroline Hall singled to center field with two outs. Despite Dani Rosner following up with a walk to put two runners on, the Leopards were unable to capitalize as Hoehn recorded another of her 10 strikeouts on the day to end the threat.

The Wolverines' offense jumped out to an early lead against Leopard starter Makayla Lecky, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits. Michigan added two more in the second, highlighted by a two-run home run from Jenissa Conway. Lecky finished her outing after two innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits.

Jordan Goedel entered the circle in relief to start the third inning. After a clean third frame, Goedel ran into hot bats in the fourth and fifth. Michigan extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly before ending the game in the fifth. With two runners on, Lauren Putz hit a three-run walk-off home run to right field to seal the 9-0 victory for the Wolverines.

Lecky was charged with the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in two innings.  Goedel allowed four earned runs on four hits with four walks over 2.1 innings.

Lafayette will continue its early-season tournament schedule Feb. 20-22, playing five games at UNC-Wilmington.
