Pettit’s Career-High 19 Points Helps Men’s Basketball Sweep Holy Cross

Leopards only led for 2:14 in the second half, overcoming 19-point deficit

WORCESTER, Mass. - On Wednesday evening in the Hart Center, Lafayette earned a come-from-behind victory over Holy Cross, 86-83, trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half.

Senior guard Ryan Pettit had a career outing with 19 points, seven rebounds and an assist. Four Leopards joined him in double figures: Caleb Williams (17), Mark Butler (13), Andrew Phillips (12) and Shareef Jackson (12) on a night when both teams shot 56 percent from the floor and 47 percent from long range. 

The Crusaders opened the game with a hot scoring stint, nailing 6-of-7 from the floor, to claim a 14-6 lead by 15:32. Aiden Disu had seven points in the spurt.

Holy Cross continued to a nine-point lead, 27-18, at the 11-minute mark. Pettit's six points off the bench for the Leopards keep the Leopards within 10. 

A 12-6 run to 3:56 stretched the hosts' lead to 39-24 lead. Tyler Boston (4) paced four Crusaders who contributed 4-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line.

Pettit concluded the first half with a layup in the final seconds for a team-high 12 points, trailing 49-33 at the break.

The Crusaders, up a game-high 19 points, kept Lafayette at bay despite even scoring through the first five minutes of the second half, 58-39 by 16:24. Christian Humphrey-Rembert's 3-pointer at the 14-minute mark helped the Leopards creep back to 11 points, 60-51, as part of a 12-2 run.

At 12:06, Pettit followed up with a bucket beyond the arc of his own to make it a six-point game (60-54).

Lafayette held steady within a three-point margin between the 10 and seven-minute marks, fueled by Butler and Williams splitting eight points, for a 69-66 deficit.

Williams hit a 3-pointer and-one from the center of the arc at 3:43 to tie the battle for the first time all game, 77-77.

Jackson gave Lafayette to its first lead of the evening, 82-80, at the two-minute mark with his own layup and-one.

Phillips was fouled while catching an offensive rebound and added two more points from the charity stripe for an 84-80 advantage with 1:20 left.

The Crusaders converted 3-of-4 foul shots in the final minute for a one-point margin, 84-83, with 24 seconds on the clock. They sent Williams to the line and he returned fire by converting two free throws to to extend the lead back up to three, 66-63.

Lafayette defended the final two Holy Cross possessions with Pettit snagging the resulting rebounds off the rim. DeAndre Williams took the last 3-point attempt for the hosts as the clock expired in the 86-83 victory.

Disu had a team-high 20 points for the Crusaders, along with two blocks and two rebounds. The hosts netted 17-of-22 at the line overall and were held to six buckets beyond the arc.
