EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore attacker
Joshua Heaney tallied five goals in a 19-5 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at Fisher Stadium. Eleven members of the Maroon and White registered goals.
The Leopards scored 19 goals for the second time this season, previously doing so against NJIT (2/14).Â
Lafayette struck first less than two minutes into the game, as
Joseph Duggan found the back of the cage at the 13:18 mark. Forty seconds later,
Benjamin DiBattista fired a pass from
Cooper Pasko past the goalkeeper, pushing the Leopards'Â lead to 2-0. Lafayette proceeded to rack up four more goals, with two coming from Heaney. Mount St. Mary's got on the board at 3:22 in the first via Nate Committee to make it 6-1. In the stanza, the Maroon and White outshot their opponent 14-5.
The Mountaineers attempted to cut into the deficit in quarter two. At 9:06, Marcelo Carreiro notched his only goal of the afternoon, making it 6-2. Carreiro's goal was the last one of the half for Mount St. Mary's, as Lafayette used a five-goal stretch to push its lead to 11-2 at halftime. Heaney tallied his third and fourth goals of the contest in the run.
Jett Klassen and
Erik Volfson added goals, while
Christian Tapia collected his first career score.
The Leopards' defense didn't allow a single goal in the third period, giving up just three shots in the quarter. The Maroon and White forced six turnovers while scooping up 10 ground balls. Offensively,
Patrick Myers' group dominated the quarter, adding in another five goals. Another score from Heaney gave him five on the day.
Clifford Chapman and
Charlie Merrick pitched in their second and first goals of the campaign, respectively.
Nick Muller took advantage of an extra-man
 opportunity, burying a shot into the net.Â
Klassen collected a hat trick in the final 15, with his second and third goals of the day.
Aidan Best joined in on the scoring party, tallying his first goal of the season. The visitors scored three times in the final five minutes, including two from Brody Atkinson in the 19-5 final.
Lafayette held an advantage in shots (49-17), shots on goal (31-6), ground balls (36-17) and caused turnovers (9-6). The Leopards won 24-28 at the X, with
Nick Faccone winning 14 of his 16.
Senior
Joe Doherty allowed three goals while making one stop. Mount St. Mary's Bennett Wright had 12 saves, allowing all 19 goals.
The Leopards
 remain at home on Feb. 28, hosting St. John's for the third game of a four-game homestand.
