WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Lafayette softball team collected a 7-5 win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the UNC-Wilmington tournament.
Sophomore
Caroline Hall delivered the biggest hit of the game, blasting a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth. Hall's first collegiate home run added to a 3-0 advantage.
The Leopards built that early lead in the third. With
Jocelyn O'Keeffe (walk) and Hall (single) aboard, Lafayette broke out with some two-out lightning. Senior
Kylee Sweet came through with a bases-clearing double to deep center field.
Regan Dillon then brought Sweet around to score with an RBI-single for the 3-0 lead.
Lafayette starting pitcher
Parker Rowden went unscathed until the top of the sixth inning, surrendering four hits over five scoreless innings. She ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Devyn Johnson singled home the first run for the Hoyas who added a second on a fielder's choice. Brook Rebhan brought the visitors within 6-3 with a double before the Lafayette defense cut down a runner at the plate, 9-6-2, to end the inning.
The Leopards got one back in the bottom of the sixth, as
Olivia Catalina's double scored
Ava Butler. Lafayette carried that 7-3 lead into the top of the seventh. Freshman reliever
Andy Hegarty faced the heart of the Georgetown order and allowed two runs before ending the game with a groundout in a 7-5 final.
Rowden collected her first victory of the season, giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Emily Collins and Marina Egbert split the pitching duties for Georgetown with Collins tagged as the loser after surrendering five runs on four hits.
The Leopards will have couple of hours to recover before playing host UNC-Wilmington today at 5:30 p.m.
