BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Lafayette used the long ball from
Caroline Hall and a solid pitching outing from
Sophia Alvarez-Backus to claim a 3-1 final over New Haven on Friday afternoon in the first day of the Spring in the Springs tournament.
The Leopards scored all of the offense they needed in the third inning at Brinkley Stadium. Soph.
Caroline Hall blasted her second home run of the season and staked Leopard defense and Alvarez-Backus to a 2-0 lead.
The Chargers scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning via a Carson Schak RBI-single that sliced the Lafayette lead to 2-1. Half of New Haven's six hits on the afternoon came in that inning.
Lafayette tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Katie Harrington's one-out double started things and
Maggie Klug followed with a single back through for the 3-1 final.
Alvarez-Backus threw all seven innings, allowing one run while scattering six hits with three strikeouts. Skylar Griffin took the loss after pitching four innings and giving up two runs.
The Leopards will play host Gardner-Webb later today (5:30 p.m.)
