WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army captured its 22nd win of the campaign on Saturday, handing Lafayette a 61-42 decision at Christl Arena. Leopard junior
Teresa Kiewiet collected 24 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
The Leopards and Black Knights struggled to find their footing in the first quarter. Through the first five minutes of action, both teams shot 2-7 from the field. Army's Kya Smith jumpstarted the offense at 4:18, knocking down a jumper in the paint for a 7-4 lead. Kiewiet answered 20 seconds later with an easy two points. The two teams were scoreless over the next two minutes before Camryn Tade drilled a mid-range shot (10-6) to begin a 7-0 Black Knight run. As the period drew to a close, Army held a 14-6 advantage.
Army outscored Lafayette 20-17 in the second quarter. Kiewiet had nine points on 4-6 shooting in the stanza. With three minutes on the clock before halftime, the Minnesota native pulled down one of her 10 rebounds before firing a pass to
Talia Zurinskas. Zurinskas found freshman
Haylie Adamski for three, cutting the deficit to 22-20. The rookie's bucket was her 63rd triple of the season, marking a new single-season high for the program. Three-point shooting was the difference maker
in down the stretch, as Montrose and Reese Erickson each drilling a shot behind the arc. The two guards capped off a stretch of 12-straight points for the hosts, resulting in a 34-23 lead at the break.
The Black Knights held the Maroon and White to 25 percent shooting in third period. Army forced five turnovers. Taylor Wilson, who finished the contest with four blocks and four steals, recorded two steals in the quarter. Army led 48-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Powered by six points from Smith, Army pulled away from Lafayette in the fourth. At 4:12, Wilson hit a pair of shots from the line to begin a 9-0 run on to the 61-42 final. Smith led the hosts with 18 points and 21 rebounds. Army forced 19 turnovers to Lafayette's seven. The Black Knights also held the advantage in assists (12 to seven).
