WEST POINT, N.Y. - On Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena, Lafayette men's basketball knocked off Army, 63-60.
Lafayette, which shot at 38 percent from the floor, was piloted by
Andrew Phillips (15) and
Caleb Williams (14) combining for 29 points. Phillips made five steals and had 12 of his points come in a crucial second-half rally. Freshman
Christian Humphrey-Rembert recorded his second collegiate double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Three Leopards got on the board early for an 8-2 advantage at 15:22 in the first half. Humphrey-Rembert grabbed four defensive boards in that time to limit the hosts scoring opportunities.
By the 11-minute mark, Williams' five points fueled a 7-4 Lafayette edge to secure a 15-6 lead.
The Black Knights fought back with 4-of-5 from the floor to pull within three points, 17-14, at 8:28. Jacen Holloway had four points in the three-minute stretch.
Williams halted the opposing advance with his second 3-pointer of the outing (8:06) as Lafayette kept the hosts at bay, 24-21 through the under-four media timeout. Army inched as close as one, 26-25, with a pair at the line by Tate Laczkowski at 1:54.
The Maroon and White looked to extend the lead in its final possession before the break, but a steal off of first-year
Luke Bevilacqua led to Kevin McCarthy's 3-pointer for Army to take a 28-26 upper hand (0:11).
The Black Knights scored four fast-break points off turnovers to open the second half, continuing out to 36-32 by the 16-minute mark.
Phillips, who had all but two of Lafayette's 11 second-half points by that point in the game, closed the margin to one, 38-37, in the next two minutes. From beyond the arc, Humphrey-Rembert tied the game 40-40 at 13:25.
The Leopards rallied for a 16-3 run to jump out to a game-high 56-43 advantage by the six-minute mark. Williams and Humphrey-Rembert each posted four points in the spurt, alongside two points apiece from four other players.
Jackson Furman's jumper at 5:50 stopped the bleeding for Army, though the hosts could not put together a comeback. Phillips' tip-in bucket brought Lafayette to a 10-point margin (3:46), 58-48.
The Black Knights relied on senior Jorn Everson to grant a pair from long range, trailing 61-58 with 15 seconds on the clock.
Mark Butler was sent to the charity stripe twice in the final minute of regulation, adding three tallies in the 63-60 outcome.
Overall, Everson led the opponents with 14 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field. The Black Knights had 39 bench points compared to Lafayette's six total.
The Leopards return home to play Loyola Maryland on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
