EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette women's basketball dropped a 62-50 final against Army on Saturday on College Hill. Freshmen
Haylie Adamski (11) and
Maddison Krug (10) both finished in double figures in the scoring column for the Leopards and sophomore point guard
Talia Zurinskas notched a career-high nine assists. Going into the contest, the Leopards had nine of 15 healthy players at their disposal vs. the conference's second-place program.
Saturday's matchup was the Maroon and White's annual Play4Kay Game. The Leopards wore their pink uniforms against Army to show their support for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and promote its impact on the ongoing battle against cancer. Before tip-off, cancer survivors Colleen Carfara and Kim Howey were escorted onto the court during starting intros to recognize their strength, courage and remind others to never lose hope.
Lafayette came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, knocking down four of its first five attempts to take a 9-4 lead (5:22). Camryn Tade and Kya Smith quickly recorded buckets to cut the visitors' deficit to three points (11-8), but the Leopards outscored Army 8-3 in the final 90 seconds of the period. Adamski, Krug and Zurinskas all found the bottom of the net during the run to hand the hosts a 19-11 lead after 10 minutes in Easton.
The Black Knights exploded for 27 points in the second stanza, shooting 55.6 percent (10-18) from the field. Army began the quarter with back-to-back buckets from Tade and Taylor Wilson, but an
Emma Heaney layup put the Leopards back up by five (21-16) at the 8:38 mark. The contest was back and forth over the next five minutes, but with 2:54 to go the visitors started to stifle Lafayette's offense, while knocking down big shots. Army concluded the half with a 9-2 run and held a 38-33 advantage at the break.
The third quarter only featured a total of 22 points as both squads struggled to run offense. Krug and junior guard
Rosie Scognamiglio got the Maroon and White rolling to start the half and with 6:04 remaining a Scognamiglio triple handed them a 41-40 lead. The Bradley Beach, N.J. native finished the outing with nine points, all of which came from beyond the arc. The Black Knights put together a 10-2 spurt as time winded down to retake a 50-43 lead with three quarters gone on College Hill.
Army held
Kia Damon-Olson's group to just seven points in the final period to advance to 18-5 (9-3, PL) when time expired. Lafayette moved to 8-15 (4-8, PL) with Saturday's defeat.
Ball security and offensive rebounds were the pillars of the matchup. The Black Knights turned the ball over six fewer times (16-10) than the Leopards and snatched 14 offensive boards to Lafayette's seven.
The Maroon and White are back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Baltimore when they face Loyola Md. for the second meeting of the season.
