Softball Hammers Out 8-6 Win Over NDSU

Sweet contributes four hits while driving in a pair; Goedel blasts another homer and collects win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Lafayette offense found its momentum in the finale of the Spring in the Springs event hosted by Gardner-Webb. The Leopards pounded out 15 hits en route to an 8.-6 win over North Dakota State on Sunday morning.

Kylee Sweet had a season-high four hits and drove in two runs, while Jordan Goedel and Caroline Hall (3-for-4) each connected for solo home runs in the Leopards' third win of the weekend.

Hall, the lead-off hitter, started the game in the best way possible by smacking a home run over the wall in left center field. The Leopards followed with two more runs. Sweet (4-for-5) singled home the second run of the inning and then swiped home for the 3-0 advantage.

In the second, two walks and Dani Rosner's RBI-single chased the NDSU starter from the game with a 4-0 Leopard advantage. The Leopards threatened for more, but left the bases loaded. The Bison got their bats going in the home half, pushing across four hits with the aid of two Leopard errors. Morgan Zimmerman drove in two of the runs with a one-out single.

The hit parade continued for the Leopards in the third. A day removed from a three-run walk-off winner, Goedel hit a solo shot. A two-run single by Harrington and a base knock from Sweet handed the Leopards an 8-4 lead at the end of three. That margin held until the sixth inning, when NDSU pushed across two more runs via two hits against Goedel.

The Leopards took the 8-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh, with Goedel facing the 5,6,7 hitters in the lineup. The Bison brought the winning run to the plate with one out in the inning after two singles. Goedel quelled the rally by pitching a pop-up and a strikeout to end the game.

Goedel claimed her first victory of the season in three starts. She gave up four earned runs on eight hits with six walks and two K's. Piper Reed was the circle loser, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings.

Next up, Lafayette will play its fourth tournament in as many weeks, heading to Farmville, Va. for the Longwood Spring Break Classic on March 7-8.
