EASTON, Pa. – A late-inning surge was not enough for Lafayette baseball, as the Leopards fell to Army, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon at Kamine Stadium.
Army broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, capitalizing on two Lafayette errors to plate five runs and take a 5-0 lead.
Lafayette broke through in the seventh inning when
Matt Colella singled to third base to drive in
Ryan Ulisse, who had doubled earlier in the frame.
The Black Knights responded in the eighth, scoring another five runs in the frame, including a two-run double by William Parker, to extend their advantage to 10-1.
The Leopards mounted a final comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth as
Alex Barrist singled and
Boden Fernsler was hit by a pitch. After that,
Jack Mislan drove in Barrist with an RBI-single and
Charlie Chropuvka launched a three-run home run to right field to cut the deficit to five. The Leopards were not able to plate another run in the 10-5 final.
Trey Zaffiro took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs, while striking out four. Robbie Penswick earned the win for Army, throwing 3.2 innings of relief while giving up aone run on four hits with five strikeouts.
The Leopards are next in action when they travel to Monmouth on Tuesday for a game at 3 p.m.
