Terrier Bats Too Much For Leopards in Finale

Rosner goes 3-for-3 with three extra-base hits; Sweet belts three-run homer in Cancer Awareness Day game

EASTON, Pa. – Boston U. used the long ball to score seven of its 14 runs while claiming the Sunday finale of the Patriot-League opening series with the Leopards.

Lafayette saw seniors Dani Rosner and Kylee Sweet with productive afternoons. Rosner was 3-for-3 with three extra-base hits and two RBI while Sweet connected for her third home run of the season, a three-run blast.

Boston U got off to a quick start in the first inning, scoring three runs via a Sophie Naivar RBI-single, a wild pitch and a throwing error.

The Leopards answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Following a lead-off single from Caroline Hall, Rosner delivered a triple to the gap in right centerfield. Katie Harrington brought Rosner the next 60 feet to pull the Leopards within one, 3-2, while prompting the quick hook for Boston U. starter Kasey Ricard.

Ricard's replacement Danika Nell, the game one winner on Saturday, retired the Leopards with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to end the rally.

In the second, Kylie Doherty's second home run of the series, a three-run home shot to right, knocked Leopards' starter Andy Hegarty from the game. Meghan  Coyle followed with a  two-run home run, handing the Terriers an 8-2 advantage.

The Terriers continued to post crooked numbers on the scoreboard, scoring three runs on three hits in the third inning and forcing a second Leopard pitching change.

Trailing 11-2 In the bottom of the inning, Rosner found the gap again, driving in Hall for the first hit off Nell. The hits kept coming in the inning as Sweet ripped a 3-2 offering deep over the wall in center for a three-run home run to trim the deficit to 11-6.

Brooke Deppiesse hit the Terriers' third homer of the day, a two-run shot in the fifth that extended the lead to 13-6 before the game ended in the fifth.

Nell, who gave way to Ricard for the final out of the game, collected the win, allowing four runs on three hits over 4.2 innings. Hegarty had the loss (6 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 2K).

The Leopards continue Patriot League play on March 28-29 with a three-game series at Army.

Notes: Prior to Sunday's series finale, both teams participated in a Cancer Awareness event, honoring friends and family members who have battled cancer.
