RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite an early lead and a late-inning surge, the Lafayette Leopards fell, 14-4, to No. 13 NC State on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Lafayette opened the scoring in the third inning.
Brandon Doubek singled and later scored on an RBI-single from
Matt Colella. Although NC State responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame,
Bode Grieve pulled the Leopards even in the fourth with a solo home run to deep right field to knot the game at 2-2.
The NC State offense responded with 11 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to stretch the score to 13-4.
Lafayette added two runs in the seventh inning.
Kyle McKernan's single was followed by a two-run home run to deep left field by pinch-hitter
Ryan Stoddard. The home run was Stoddard's first collegiate home run.
The game concluded in the bottom of the seventh after Brandon Novy hit a solo home run for the Wolfpack to reach the 10-run margin.
Gregory Quintana took the loss, surrendering five runs on four hits over 3.1 innings of work, while striking out one. Cooper Consiglio earned the win for NC State, allowing two runs on four hits across six innings, while striking out eight.
Lafayette is next in action when it travels to La Salle on Wednesday for a game at 3 p.m.
