Baseball Drops Hard-Fought Doubleheader at Navy

Lafayette closes out its four-game series with Navy on Sunday at 1 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Lafayette baseball team dropped both ends of a Patriot League doubleheader at Navy on Saturday, falling 7-1 in the opener before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker in 11 innings during the nightcap.

In game one, Lafayette struck first in the top of the first inning when Liam Ebbs launched a home run to right field on the first pitch of the game. However, the advantage was short-lived as Navy's Chris Klug answered with a solo shot in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game, 1-1.

Navy took the lead for good in the second inning, on a sacrifice fly, 2-1, and extended its cushion with two unearned runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Mids added an insurance in the fourth on a two-run double.

Lafayette's best chance to narrow the gap came in the fifth inning when Charlie Chropuvka and Boden Fernsler both singled to put runners on the corners, but they were ultimately left stranded.

Navy capped the scoring in the sixth when a throwing error by Lafayette allowed a runner to cross the plate, to bring the final tally to 7-1.

The Leopards struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Navy starter Matt Archibald, who earned the win by pitching a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out 12 batters. Alex Payne took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and three walks.

In game two, Lafayette starter Gregory Quintana delivered a dominant performance, throwing seven scoreless innings, while allowing just six hits. The freshman struck out six batters and did not issue a single walk before being relieved in the eighth inning.

The Leopards threatened several times throughout the contest. In the top of the ninth, Ebbs led off with a single and Alex Barrist followed with a base hit to put two runners on. Matt Colella advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, putting the go-ahead run at third base. However, the rally ended when Brandon Doubek flew out to right field and Ebbs was thrown out at home attempting to score.

In the 10th inning, Fernsler singled to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chropuvka. After Will Dobil walked, Ryan Ulisse singled to left field, but Boden Fernsler was called out at third base on an appeal to end the inning after scoring what appeared to be the go-ahead run for the Leopards.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 11th. Navy's Chris Klug singled with two outs, stole second and scored the winning run on an RBI-single through the left side by Evan Brown, to make the final score 1-0.

Jackson Clark earned the win for Navy, providing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Clark allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out three. Owen Basso took the loss, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two and walking two.

The Leopards will next take on Navy in a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
