Leopards Outlasted by St. Peter’s in Mid-Week Contest

Doubek drove in two runs for Lafayette

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Despite a resilient effort to close the gap in the middle innings, the Lafayette baseball team fell 15-5 to St. Peter's on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.

St. Peter's jumped to an early lead in the first inning when Steve Polizzi hit a three-run home run. The Leopards responded in the second inning as Boden Fernsler singled and eventually scored on an error. Ryan Stoddard then grounded out to drive in Will Dobil and cut the deficit to 3-2.

After the Peacocks added a run in the third, Lafayette tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fifth. Teddy Cashman and Alex Barrist drew walks and stole bases before Brandon Doubek drove them both home with a two-out single to shortstop. However, St. Peter's reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs to take a 7-4 advantage.

The Leopards continued to fight in the sixth as Dobil doubled down the left-field line and later scored on an error to bring the score to 7-5. The comeback attempt was halted in the bottom of the seventh when SPU utilized five hits and four walks to plate eight runs and claim the contest 15-5.

Logan Wenzel earned the win, providing 1.1 innings of relief while allowing a hit and a run and striking out three. Trey Zaffiro took the loss for Lafayette, giving up three hits and three runs with two K's over 2.2 innings.

Lafayette is next in action when it hosts rival Lehigh for a four-game series starting on Friday at 3 p.m.
