EASTON, Pa. — Despite a resilient middle-inning surge, Lafayette baseball fell to Wagner, 15-11, on Tuesday afternoon at Kamine Stadium.
Lafayette finished with 14 hits, led by three-hit performances from
Will Dobil and
Bode Grieve.
Alex Barrist and
Matt Colella also recorded multi-hit games.
Wagner jumped out to an early lead, plating six runs in the first inning. The Leopards began their climb back in the bottom half of the frame when Dobil hit an RBI-double and
Brandon Doubek added a run-scoring groundout to make the tally 6-2. The Seahawks answered with a run in the second, extending their advantage to 7-2.
The Leopards briefly took the lead in the third inning following a four-run second and a three-run third. Grieve ignited the second-inning rally with a double, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Kyle McKernan. Dobil added another RBI-single before Colella drove him in with a base hit to center field. In the third,
Ryan Stoddard tied the game with an RBI-single, and Barrist followed with a two-run single, to give Lafayette a 9-7 advantage.
The lead grew to 10-7 in the fourth inning when
Charlie Chropuvka launched a solo home run to right field. However, Wagner reclaimed the lead with a three-run fifth and a solo run in the sixth to bring the score to 11-10. The Seahawks scored another run in the top of the seventh for a 12-10 advantage. Lafayette threatened again in the bottom of the seventh as Colella hit an RBI-double to score Dobil and cut the deficit to 12-11. The Leopards could not pull back ahead. Wagner added to its advantage with three insurance runs over the final two innings.Â
James Reese took the loss for Lafayette. In 1.1 innings of work, he allowed two hits and one earned run, while striking out two. Christopher Collina earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings of relief and allowing five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The Leopards will next travel to Army for a three-game series starting on Saturday at 12 p.m.
