PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Despite a mid-game power surge from
Luke Caucci, Lafayette fell to Penn, 13-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium in a Liberty Bell Classic Semifinal.
Penn established an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding four more in the second. Lafayette broke through in the third when Caucci led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, making the score 3-1. The Quakers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 9-1.
The Leopards narrowed the gap in the fourth inning after
Brandon Doubek and
Boden Fernsler drew walks, setting the stage for
Teddy Cashman. Cashman delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to right field, scoring both Doubek and Fernsler, to bring the score to 9-3.
Lafayette threatened again in the fifth inning as Doubek and
Liam Ebbs notched back-to-back singles and Fernsler was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. However, the Leopards were unable to capitalize. Penn scored a single run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh, to bring the final tally to 13-3.
Tyler Kidwell took the loss. In 1.1 innings of work, Kidwell allowed three hits and four runs, while walking three batters. Connor Darling earned the win for Penn, throwing one perfect inning. Darling faced three batters, recording two strikeouts.
Lafayette is next in action when it travels to Navy for a four-game series starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
