Late Goal Pushes Women's Soccer Past Colgate in PL Opener

Zaffanella scores her third goal of the season

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Senior midfielder Nadia Zaffanella delivered the game-winner in the 76th minute to lift Lafayette women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Colgate in its Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small Field. Zaffanella, the reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Week, eclipsed 20 career goals with the strike, tying her with Caroline Tuttle for the fourth-most goals in program history.

The Leopards opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Era Methoxha converted a penalty kick following a yellow card issued to a Colgate defender in the box. Colgate answered back in the 31st minute on an unassisted goal by Fiorella Perone to level the match at 1-1 entering halftime.

Lafayette was awarded a corner in the 76th minute and off of that corner Zaffanella delivered the game-winner high to the left corner off an assist from Brianna Sousa at the 75:35 mark. Lafayette held off a late push by Colgate to secure its first conference win of the season, 2-1.

Lafayette goalkeeper Catherine Apker stopped eight shots in a full 90 minutes of action. Colgate goalkeeper Ella Poppinga recorded four saves over 90 minutes.

The Leopards will travel to Washington,D.C.to take on American on Saturday.
