NEW YORK, N.Y. - Classmates Justine Puig and Noa Kamphuis powered Lafayette in its 3-0 win over FDU on Saturday at the Big Apple Tournament. Puig (13) and Kamphuis (12) each hit new single game highs in kills while producing 25 of the Leopards' 46 spikes.
The Leopards found themselves down early in set one, trailing 11-7. Puig slapped down a kill, beginning a three-point spurt. After FDU's Isabella Scarfone recorded a kill, Kamphuis and Sophia Wilson answered and knotted the set at 12 with a kill and service ace, respectively. The two squads traded scores back and forth up until the conclusion of the set. With the period tied at 19-19, the Knights collected three of the following four points (22-20). Starting with another kill from Puig, the Maroon and White rattled off three-straight scores to regain a 23-22 advantage. The Knights' Szonja Csabai tied the set immediately after, but a Kamphuis spike and FDU setting error granted Lafayette a 25-23 win.
The second set witnessed the Maroon and White jump out to a 5-2 lead, with a trio of points coming via kills from Kamphuis. The opponents countered a few points later, ripping off 5-1 run and found themselves within reach (10-9). The Leopards, who never lost the lead, used runs of three and four-consecutive points in the thick of the set to push themselves closer to match point (22-15). Despite a valiant effort, FDU took five of the following seven points (24-20), but the Leopards managed to secure the second set 25-20 after a service error from the Knights.
The Maroon and White took the third set with a 25-20 final, finalising the 3-0 sweep over FDU. Puig counted six kills alongside a .417 hitting percentage, while Destiny McKenzie recorded nine match kills. Sophia Wilson led the Leopards in assists during the set, tallying seven. LK LaMonica, who made her collegiate debut in the contest, added in four assists of her own.
Lafayette wraps up the Big Apple Tournament at 6 p.m. when it takes on Columbia.
