Carlos Tavares is in his sixth year as an assistant professor of Sociology in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Lafayette and his third season as a faculty mentor for the Lafayette football program.
A native of Praia, Cape Verde Tavares earned his undergraduate degrees in Sociology (BA) and Psychology (BS) from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, his master’s degree from Lehigh University and received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University. Tavares played Division III collegiate basketball at Eastern Nazarene College. While at Duke, he was a National Institutes of Health- National Institute on Aging Pre-doctoral Trainee in the Demography of Aging and Health.
Tavares, who was hired in July 2018 and is currently teaching courses in health disparities, the social determinants of health, and life course studies. He also teaches research methods and introduction to sociology in the Anthropology and Sociology Department. Tavares’ special research interests include medical sociology, race and ethnicity, health, aging and the life course, social stratification and mobility and religion. His research has been published in various social science and medical journals. His non-academic hobbies are playing basketball, piano and coaching both his daughter and son’s sports teams.
A resident of College Hill, Tavares is married to his wife, Heather Tavares, and has two children.
