Wali Lundy is in the midst of his third season as the running backs coach on John Garrett's staff.
Lundy continued to oversee the progression of Selwyn Simpson during the abbreviated 2021 spring season. Simpson garnered All-Patriot League First-Team honors after finishing second on the team in rushing (34 carries for 97 yards) and third on the team in receiving (6 catches for 71 yards). Simpson was a second-team selection in 2019 after leading the Leopards in rushing for the second time in his career. He carried 82 times for 360 yards and five scores, two of which came against Lehigh in the season finale. Equally as important for Lundy was adding depth in the backfield, as freshmen John Gay and Jaden Sutton each received significant reps in all 12 games of their initial season. Lafayette finished second in the Patriot League with 137.7 rushing yards per game in conference play.
Prior to Lafayette, Lundy spent the last two seasons as an assistant football coach at Pace University. While there, he saw running back Jhalen Bien-Aime run for 922 yards and seven touchdowns in a 7-3 season. That followed a 1000-yard rushing campaign with seven touchdowns by Bien-Aime in Lundy’s first season with the NCAA Division II school which competes in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Lundy attended the University of Virginia where he earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors his senior season of 2006, serving as a captain from 2005 to 2006. He left as the conference’s all-time leading scorer in terms of touchdowns with 52, a mark he held for a decade. Lundy played in 49 games at Virginia, rushing for 3,193 yards, the fifth-highest total ever in school history, and 4,497 all-purpose yards. He secured Freshman All-America laurels in 2002. Lundy’s collegiate playing career overlapped with Garrett who was the Virginia wide receivers coach from 2004-07.
An NFL career followed in 2006-07 with the Houston Texans. Lundy was the starting running back his rookie season and also played on special teams with the Texans. He ran for 476 yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season.
Lundy attended Virginia from 2002-2006 and finished his degree in Sociology at Arizona State in 2017. Anative of Burlington, New Jersey, Lundy is married to his wife, Anjoinette, and they have a son, Xavier.
