EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The near capacity crowd which showed up for Lafayette's battle with Ivy League foe Princeton on Wednesday was not disappointed as the Leopards outlasted the Tigers, 80-73, in a head-to-head battle from beginning to end.

Four Leopards finished in double-digits for Lafayette, behind 17 points by sharp-shooter Brian Burke. Frank Barr, Tim Bieg and Tyson Whitfield each came through with 15 apiece as Barr also grabbed a career-high 15 boards for his second double-double of the season.

Lafayette (4-3) battled for the lead throughout the first half as neither team could exceed the other by more than three points. The Leopards were down by two points at 29-27 with four and a half minutes remaining but were able to tie it up with a pair of free throws by Burke. Princeton tied the contest and grabbed the lead off back-to-back buckets by senior Nate Walton.

The Leopards tied the contest at 33-33 with a pair of Rob Worthington free throws and a missed three by the Tigers put the ball in the hands of Burke who drilled a three with less than five seconds remaining in the half to put the Leopards up 36-33 heading to the locker rooms.

Lafayette never relinquished the lead again, going up by as many as eight points but Princeton (2-3) never gave up. Tiger forward Mike Bechtold, who finished with 23 points, closed the gap to one point with 3:33 remaining on a pair of foul shots.

Lafayette relied on free throw shooting to close the door on the Tigers with Bieg nailing six consecutive shots from the line in the last minute and a half. A pair of free throws by Whitfield with .01 second left put the final 80 on the board for the Lafayette squad and gave the team a mark of 96.0% (24-25) from the stripe for the game.

Walton recorded a double-double in the loss, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Ed Persia also finished with 14 points while teammate C.J. Chapman added 12 on the night.

The Leopards head to Atlantic 10 opponent Fordham on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. to continue their non-conference slate.
