EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette fell to Lehigh, 78-69, on Saturday evening in Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards still lay claim to the series lead, 150-100.
Lehigh's 13-0 run deep in the second half put the game away for the opponents. Andrew Urosevic connected on a trio of long range buckets in the spurt.
Lafayette shot 50 percent from the floor and tallied 14 3-pointers.
Caleb Williams had 26 points and dished six assists to pace the Maroon and White. Senior guard
Ryan Pettit made a game-high four steals.
By the 15-minute mark of the first half,
Andrew Phillips drained a 3-pointer (17:08) to get Lafayette an opening 7-3 advantage. The Mountain Hawks recovered with a 12-6 run, seven points of which came from Hank Alvey, to steal the lead, 15-13 at 10:48.
Lafayette used its home-court momentum to keep Lehigh scoreless and tally 10 unanswered points, including 4-for-4 at the line. By 7:52, four Leopards aided in the onslaught to the 23-15 lead, paced by four from Phillips.
Lehigh took its turn inside the arc, holding the hosts' offense hostage to get back in the lead, 27-23, in the next three minutes.
Christian Humphrey-Rembert's 3-pointer at 3:19 preceded a Phillips and-one (2:51) to fight for the 31-27 advantage. Williams and Phillips knocked down two more free throws apiece in the final minute to help Lafayette with a 37-33 halftime lead.
The Leopards outscored the Mountain Hawks 9-6 to kick off the second period, remaining in the lead, 46-39, at the 15-minute mark.
Lehigh crafted a 9-2 run using 3-for-3 from the floor and one shot beyond the arc to get a 48-48 tie at 11:43. Urosevic's back-to-back 3-pointers followed up to give the Mountain Hawks their first advantage (54-48) since 4:03 in the first half.
At 6:50, the opponents led by a game-high 13 points, 63-50, from hot shooting by Urosevic.
Phillips and Williams each scored from beyond the arc to shorten the margin to seven, 63-56, over the next minute. To stick within four, Williams added seven points by 3:25, as Lafayette trailed 67-63.
Lehigh went back on the offensive in the final two minutes using a 9-4 spurt to stay out of reach thereafter, 76-67, at 1:26.
Alvey commanded four Mountain Hawks in double figures with 22 points, shooting 10-of-17 from the floor, and nine rebounds. Lehigh totaled 54 percent from the floor.
Next up, the Leopards travel to Holy Cross on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
