NEW HAVEN, Conn. (www.lafayette.edu) - Maria Smear and Helene Schutrumpf each scored 16 points as the Yale's women's basketball team (3-5) defeated Lafayette (3-5) in a Patriot League-Ivy League match-up.
Behind 49 percent shooting from the field, four players scored in double-figures for Yale. Alyson Miller scored a season-high 12 points and dished out five assists while Caitlin Bair had a career-high with 12 points, including 11 in the first half. Meg Simpson controlled the boards for the Bulldogs, pulling down eight rebounds and chipping in six points.
Jennifer Bayer led Lafayette with 16 points, and Megan Haughey and Laurie Infantino followed with 10 points each. The Leopards shot 42 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Yale controlled most of the game, going ahead by 15 in the first half at the 9:26 mark. Bair was almost perfect in the first period. She was 3-5 from the field, 3-3 from the three-point land and 2-2 from the line. Yale entered the locker room ahead 35-28.
In the second half, Schutrumpf and Smear caught on fire. Schutrumpf added 14 in the second period, while Smear tacked on 10 additional points.
Lafayette doesn't have much time to recover from the road loss as it hosts the United States Air Force Academy at noon on Sunday, Dec. 10.
