BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A strong pitching performance from Kevin Swords (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and a six-run sixth inning provided the impetus for Lafayette's 10-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader vs. Lehigh on Saturday. Swords allowed just three runs in six innings of work in his first win of the season.
Senior Mike Palos (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) led off the Lafayette second with a solo homer to give Lafayette a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't hold up for long, as all three of the runs that Swords allowed in the game were accounted for in the bottom of the second.
Swords walked in the first run of the inning. The second run scored on a fielder's choice from the bat of Chip McAteer. Justin Pagan plated Lehigh's final run of the inning with an RBI-single through the right side to give Lehigh a 3-1 advantage.
Lafayette tied the game with two runs in the top of the third. Senior Bob Osipower (Quakertown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) brought home sophomore Tye Gonser (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles) with a two-out single. Gonser had kept the inning alive by reaching base with his two-out single. Sophomore Jon Kline (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) singled home Osipower to tie the game at 3-3.
In the fourth, the Leopards took the lead for good, when sophomore Jason Moll's (Montville, NJ/Newark Academy) double to left center scored freshman Russ Giglio (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge).
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Leopards exploded for six runs to seal the game. Moll, Vince D'Angelis (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional), Gonser and Kline all contributed RBI-singles for the Leopards. The Lafayette baserunners were aided by three wild pitches from Lehigh starter Chris Frey and two errors from the Mountain Hawk defense.
The six-run sixth inning gave Lafayette a 10-3 lead going into the seventh. Lehigh scored one run against Lafayette reliever Palos to make the final 10-4.
Swords struck out four and allowed just three hits in the mound win. Frey was tagged for 10 runs while allowing 11 hits.
The Leopards improve to 7-16 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh drops to 11-12 overall and just 1-5 in the Patriot League.
Lafayette returns to action at noon on Sunday, when the Leopards will battle with Lehigh in another Patriot League doubleheader in Bethlehem, Pa.
