Lafayette Baseball Drops Finale to Bucknell

Doubek swats two home runs

EASTON, Pa. - Despite three hits and a pair of home runs from junior Brandon Doubek, Lafayette dropped a 13-7 decision to Bucknell on Monday afternoon at Kamine Stadium.

After a scoreless first inning from both sides, the Bison, who claim a Patriot-League best 11-1 mark in conference play, got on the board in their half of the second. The visitors churned out three runs on two hits to take an early 3-0 lead in the series finale.

The Maroon and White responded in the bottom of the frame thanks to Doubek, Jack Mislan and Charlie Chropuvka. With no one on, Doubek drove a ball over the right field fence for the Leopards' first run of the game. After a single into left by Will Dobil, Mislan smacked a ball into the gap for an RBI-double. Chropuvka plated Mislan two batters later with a groundout to short (3-3).

Bucknell answered in third with four runs to retake a 7-3 advantage. Michael Trommer collected his first RBI with a single into right field, scoring Billy Fluharty. After Ty Lagoni reached on an error, the visitors' Garrett Mathias chased Leopard starter Ben Waterman from the game with a three-run shot (7-3). The Bison added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning with a home run from Trommer to push their lead to five.

After three scoreless innings, Lafayette gained some momentum in its half of the sixth. Doubek tallied his second home run of the day prior to Chropuvka shooting an RBI-single into left field to plate Mislan once again (8-5).

Errors committed by the Leopards helped grow the Bison lead down the stretch. In the seventh, a fielding miscue on an attempted steal pushed the ball into center, granting Bucknell a 9-5 lead. Lafayette countered with a run in the home half of the seventh after a wild pitch (9-6). In the eighth inning, the visitors added two more runs after the Maroon and White bobbled a ground ball (11-6).

The Maroon and White appeared ready to strike in their half of the eighth. Senior Ryan Ulisse stepped into the box with runners on first and second. The utilityman roped a long single to the centerfield fence to bring home Boden Fernsler, cutting the score to 11-7. Bucknell's Hadley Maxwell rebounded from the single, striking out Barrist and Liam Ebbs to end the inning.

The visitors added two more runs in the ninth for the 13-7 final. Trommer led the Bison offense with a pair of hits and three RBI.

For the Leopards, Doubek and Chropuvka both tallied a pair of RBI's. Lafayette held an advantage in hits (11 to 9) and stolen bases (7 to 3).

Bucknell's Brady Hoar moved to 4-2 on the campaign, allowing three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. Ben Waterman (1-2) was dealt the loss after giving up six earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

The Leopards travel to Penn on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
