EASTON, Pa. -
In a battle of two of the Patriot League's top scorers, Lafayette closed out its season with an 11-8 loss to Army on Tuesday at Metzgar Fields.
Lafayette's Kevin Bromby (Ipswich, Mass./Governor Dummer) and Army's Tim Pearson came into the game with hot sticks. Bromby entered with 46 points (30 goals, 16 assists), while Pearson brought his 21 goals and 24 assists (45 points) to the table. Pearson scored three goals and dished out two assists and narrowly got the best of Bromby who finished the game with two goals and two assists.
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead by 9:02 thanks to a pair of goals from Pearson that surrounded Lee Dingman's goal at 12:16. The feisty Lafayette squad did not fold, however, scoring five unanswered goals to close out the first quarter with a 5-3 lead. Kevin Angelis (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) started things off with an unassisted score at 5:46. Less than a minute later Drew Stotler (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored his only goal of the game off a pass from Ted Blackburn (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) to make it 3-2. Blackburn would also assist on the next two goals, scores by Bromby at 3:39 and 3:01 that gave Lafayette a 4-3 lead. With 1:21 remaining in the first quarter, Morgan Battle (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School) scored Lafayette's fifth goal off a pass from Mike Fiorillo (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley).
After a lone Army tally in the second quarter by Mike Kamon, the third quarter scoring heated up. Army's John Ryan scored a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart to give Army a 6-5 lead at the 14:28 mark. Battle answered for the Leopards at 12:35, knotting the game at 6-6 off a pass from Bromby. Goals by John Fernandez (11:33) and Alex Fyfe (9:14) turned the advantage over to Army for good. Dingman and Fernandez each added another Army goal to offset Battle's final two scores of the quarter to give Army the 10-8 advantage. Pearson tacked on his third goal of the game at 14:05 in the fourth quarter to run the final to 11-8.
Lafayette finishes the season with a 7-7 record, the program's most wins since the 1984 season. Army (7-7) will close out its regular season at Rutgers on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
