Softball Players Earn All-America Scholar-Athlete Honors

Sept. 29, 2000

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Four members of the 2000 Lafayette softball team were named All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Sept. 12 for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.5 or above during the 1999-2000 academic year. The award, which is sponsored by Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, was presented to Erin Hall ,'00, Gina Galati '01, Mara Shainheit '03 and Kathy Vassos '03.

Erin Hall (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) graduated in May with a degree in biology. She finished with a record of 4-9 as the Leopards' No. 1 pitcher and walked only 17 batters all season.

Leopards' starting catcher Gina Galati (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillon) drove in a team-best 16 runs last season while slamming three home runs and five doubles. The economics major had a .479 slugging percentage last season, second best on the team, and hit a game-winning extra-inning homerun against La Salle for the team's first win of the season.

A sophomore biology major, Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Ravicocas Valley) is coming off a stellar freshman campaign at her shortstop position. She finished the 2000 season with a .295 batting average, recorded a double and three triples and finished second on the team in hits with 23.

Kathy Vassos (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) split time with Hall for the No. 2 pitching position last season. The sophomore biology major won her first career game in a late season, 13-inning win over Holy Cross in which she pitched her first complete game as a Leopard.

The Leopards finished third in the Patriot League last season with a record of 4-6, a tremendous improvement from their sixth place finish in 1999. Head coach John Wong was named the league's Coach of the Year for the Leopards' turnaround.

The 2001 softball team debuts this spring on March 13 at North Carolina A&T. Included on the team's schedule are non-league foes Penn, Columbia, St. Joseph's, George Mason, Rider and Villanova, as well as league competitors Holy Cross, Colgate, Army, Bucknell and Lehigh.
