EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette earned its first Patriot League win of the season in convincing fashion as it dominated league-leading Holy Cross for an 82-67 home victory on Wednesday. Lafayette earned its eighth-straight win over the Crusaders while also earning the program's 1,100th victory.
Lafayette (7-10, 1-3) could seem to do nothing wrong as it came up with a big basket whenever Holy Cross came within striking distance. Tyson Whitfield provided a number of those big shots, going 6-of-9 from behind the arc and pouring in a game-high 24-points to go along with seven rebounds. Fellow co-captain Tim Bieg had a huge impact on the game's momentum as well, going 9-for-10 from the free throw line and finishing with 18 points and a career-high six steals.
Frank Barr, the Patriot League's Player of the Week twice already this season, made a strong case for himself again with 21 points, eight boards and four blocked shots while holding the Crusaders' leading rebounder Josh Sankes to just four boards on the night.
Lafayette shot a sizzling 84 percent from the free throw line while Holy Cross could only manage a mark of 55.9 percent. The Leopards' also shot 50 percent from three-point land and had 30 fast breakpoints to the Crusaders' six.
Holy Cross (14-5, 4-1) suffered its first league loss of the season after entering the game on a four-game league winning streak. The Crusaders were led offensively by Sankes and Jared Curry who scored 15 points each. Ryan Serravalle also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Next up for the Leopards is a home contest versus Army on Saturday in the second game of a women's and men's Patriot League doubleheader. Tip-off is slated for 3:15 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased right here at GoLeopards.com.
