EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's indoor track and field team kicked off its season with a fourth place finish Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational, as it faced the Bison, St. Joseph's and Maryland-Eastern Shore in the one-day dual event.
Junior shot putter Jim Fischer (Dumont, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was the lone first place finisher for the Leopards and won the event with a throw of 49'9 3/4". Sophomore Mark Brault (York, Maine/York) placed second in the pole vault while sophomore 35 lb. weight thrower Jim Mangarillo (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays), senior 5000-yard runner Art Lathers (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township), and freshman high jumper Christopher Nixon (Perrineville, N.J./Peddie School) each earned third place finishes in their respective events.
"One of a coach's concerns is what the athletes were going to do over semester break as far as conditioning went," coach Julio Piazza said about the Leopards first meet since Dec. 6. "But they came back to school in very good shape, not wanting to throw away the hard work they had done in the fall."
Bucknell won the invitational with a final score of 93 followed by St. Joe's (46), Maryland-E. Shore (32) and Lafayette (24).
Lafayette heads to New York on Jan. 12-13 for the Armory Collegiate Invitational.
