VESTAL, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - In the consolation game of the Binghamton Time Warner Classic, Long Island University (2-2) held off Lafayette (0-4), 72-58. The Blackbirds received 21 points and 12 rebounds from junior forward Tamika Dudley, and 17 points from junior guard Kim Mac Millan. Mac Millan scored 30 points in LIU's 82-79 opening-round loss to Morehead State, and was named to the all-tournament team.
Lafayette took its first lead of the game off a three-pointer by sophomore Megan Haughey (Pittstown, N.J./North Hunderdon) at 12:35 in the first half. The Leopards stretched the lead to eight off a jumper by freshman Lindsay Myers (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) who made her first career start for Lafayette. Junior center Jennifer Bayer (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) converted two of her eight free throws to put Lafayette ahead by 10.
The Blackbirds fought back with a 19-6 run led by Corinne Broadhead who put LIU ahead for good 47-45 on a three-pointer with 9:55 to play in the second half.
Lafayette kept it close, thanks primarily to 13-of-17 free throw shooting in the second half. The Leopards, who shot just 30% from the field, were led by sophomore forward Colleen Fitzpatrick who tallied 14 points. Bayer was a perfect eight-of-eight from the charity strip for 12 points while junior Elizabeth Rojahn (York, Pa./Central York) went 5-13 for 12 points while pulling down a team-high seven boards. Junior guard Kim Costello (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) also reached double-digits for the second time in two games with 10 points.
Lafayette hosts Rider in its home opener on Thursday at 5:30.
