EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's basketball team lost a 72-62 overtime game to visiting Yale on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. The Bulldogs shot 7-12 from three-point land including a basket from Morgan Richards late in overtime to pull away for the victory.
Yale (4-3) led by as many as seven points in the first half, going up 19-12 when freshman Lindsay Page hit a jumper at 12:28. Lafayette took the lead into the locker room however, when Liz Rojahn gave her team a 29-28 lead with 28 seconds leftr in the half.
Yale held onto a slim lead for most of the second half off a 12-point second half effort by Meg Simpson. The Bulldogs' Tory Mauseth hit from beyond the arc to give her team its biggest lead of the game, 53-45, at 6:41.
The Leopards clawed their way back led by Rojahn who shot 3-4 from the field in the final 4:18. Rojahn gave Lafayette a 57-56 advantage with 22 seconds remaining. The Leopards forced a Yale turnover on the Bulldogs' next possession. Junior Kim Costello was fouled by a Yale defender. Costello made one of two free throw attempts.
Richards tied the game 58-58 with five seconds remaining on a layup. After allowing Lafayette to take a 60-58 lead on a Rojahn jumper, Yale rattled off an 11-0 run and eventually outscored 14-4 in the extra session. Richards hit a her only three-pointer of the day in overtime to give Yale a five-point lead 65-60 that was enough to hold on for the win.
The Bulldogs had four players reach double digits including Christina Phillips with 14 points, Simpson with 12, and Page and Richards with 10 points each.
Lafayette was led by Rojahn with a game-high 16 points. Junior Jen Bayer hit for 11 points followed by Costello with 10 and freshman Lindsay Myers with a career-high nine. Bayer pulled down nine boards to pace the Leopards while Costello added four steals.
Lafayette will take a 13-day hiatus before traveling to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
