EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette was able to come back from a 14-point deficit to close within five in the second half, but it was not enough as the Leopards fell to visiting Drexel, 87-83, Tuesday in women's basketball action. The loss snapped Lafayette's three-game winning streak over the Dragons.
Lafayette (7-17) played catch-up throughout most of the first half, falling behind by as many as 12 points with four minutes left before the break. But the Leopards were able to hold Drexel's offense in check before heading into the locker room as they closed to within one point at 41-40 at the one minute mark off a pair of free throws by Jennifer Bayer.
A field goal by Katrina Martin and a three-pointer by Bridget Scanlan put the Dragons up 46-40 going into the intermission.
Drexel (14-9) went on a 16-2 run in the first six minutes of the second period but the Leopards managed to fight back to close within five points, 80-75, with 3:15 left on the clock. The Dragons, however, were able to seal the victory on free throws when Lafayette had to resort to fouling to stop the clock.
Bayer led four Leopards who scored in double figures with 19 points and nine rebounds in the non-conference game. Christel Rocha and Samaiyah Council each added 15 points and Christina LiVecchi chipped in 12. Rocha also finished with five assists, five boards and two steals while freshman Colleen Fitzpatrick had a team-high 10 rebounds.
