ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Anne Tierney scored the first 10 second-half points to help Lehigh rally and defeat Lafayette, 60-52, in a Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinal game, Friday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md.
Lafayette shot 46-percent from the field and forced 15 Lehigh turnovers in building a 29-21 halftime lead. Tierney scored the first 10 Mountain Hawk points over the opening 4:40 of the second half to help Lehigh narrow the deficit to 33-31. The Mountain Hawks took their first lead of the second half, 34-33, on a three-point field goal from Gina Zang with 13:50 to play in the game.
The two teams were knotted at 38-38 with 11:08 remaining in the game before Lehigh scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 48-39 lead with 7:15 left on the clock. Lafayette could get no closer than six points during the rest of the game.
Tierney notched her 17th double-double of the season with 26 points and 17 rebounds, with 18 points and 10 rebounds coming after halftime.
Tierney's counterpart, sophomore Jennifer Bayer, led the Leopards with 11 points. Junior guard Samaiyah Council dished out five assists, four in the first half, to lead the Leopards. Council also picked the Mountain Hawks for three steals.
The two teams were meeting in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament for the third straight season, the Leopards having won the previous two meetings.
Lehigh improves to 15-13 on the season and will face Colgate in Saturday's 9:30 p.m. semifinal game. Lafayette ends its season with a 7-21 record.
