`Pards Softball Completes Sweep Of Army

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette earned its first two Patriot League wins of the season with a two-game sweep of the preseason conference favorite Army Black Knights, 4-2 and 4-3, on Friday at Metzgar Fields.

In the first game, Lafayette (6-28, 2-8 PL) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, sparked by a one-out triple by freshman Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Academy). Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) rocked a two-run home run in the next at-bat, giving the Leopards the two-run advantage.

The Leopards added to their lead in the third inning, started by a two-out single by Schrager. Chmielow ski hit an RBI double and Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) reached base and advanced on an error by Gina Fox, which advanced scored Chmielowski for the 4-0 lead.

Army (12-16, 6-4 PL) rallied in the fifth inning, started by a single by Misty Munoz. Fox then singled to right field, advancing pinch runner Wendy Otto to second. Melissa Parrish was then walked, loading the bases for Nicki Robbins. Robbins flied out to centerfield, however, leaving the bases loaded. Sarah Thornton stepped up to double to center field, picking up the Black Knights two RBI in the game.

Mollie Moschberger (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson Fairhaven) picked up the win for the Leopards, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two.

Army's ace Shauna Evans picked up the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Schrager and Chmielowski each went 2-for-3 with Chmielowski picking up four RBI. Wise was 1-for-3 and Liz Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover) went 1-for-2.

In the nightcap, the Black Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jen Knowlden hit a two-run, two-out homer. Chrissy O'Hara then singled but was caught stealing to retire the side.

Lafayette cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth as Erin Allison (Brewster, N.Y.) reached based on an error by Thornton. Allison advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved up to third on a single by Siliato. Leigh Minarick (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) lined out to center field but was able to drive in Heather Danchak (Clark Summit, Pa./Lakeland) who had pinch ran for Allison.

The Leopards added another run in the fifth inning when Wise hit a solo home run, knotting the game at two apiece.

After a quick one-two-three inning for Army, Lafayette started a sixth inning rally. Siliato reached on an error by Thornton, her second of the game, and advanced to second on a single to left field by Minarick. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Evans, who had come on in relief of starter Ashlie Chrisitian for Army. Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) then tripled to right field, driving in the Leopards' last two runs of the game for a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Army was able to put a scare in Lafayette in the top of the seventh, getting a lead off home run by Knowlden followed by a single by O'Hara. Christie Cioffi sacrificed a bunt to advance O'Hara and Christian, hitting for Evans, singled to advance O'Hara to third. Christian then stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. But Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) was able to get the next two batters in the Army order to fly out, giving Lafayette the win.

Magos (2-8) earned the win allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two.

Christian picked up the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Wise went 3-for-3 in the game and 4-for-6 in the series.

Lafayette continues its series with Army with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
