EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette,edu) - The Lafayette softball team split a doubleheader with Army on Saturday at Metzgar Fields, losing the first game 9-4 and winning the second 3-1, to take three of four games from the preseason conference favorite this weekend.
Army (13-17, 7-5) got out to a quick start in the first game, getting its first two runs in the second inning sparked by a solo home run by Jen Knowlden. Christie Cioffi singled up the middle and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Ashlie Christian. Cioffi took third on a wild pitch by freshman Mollie Moschberger (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) and scored on the next play, a single by Misty Munoz to right field.
The Black Knights extended their lead in the next inning, getting an RBI single from Chrissy O'Hara and an RBI from Cioffi on a fielder's choice.
The fifth inning would bring in three more Army runs when Christian hit a two RBI single to center field. Munoz then singled to drive in the last run of the side.
Lafayette (7-25, 3-9) put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, started by a single by Erin Allison (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster). Stacy Brewer (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) pinch ran for Allison, taking second on a single by Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley). Laura Shrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly Academy) singled in the next at-bat loading the bases for Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) who reached base on an error by Gina Fox and picked up an RBI.
Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) drove in another run with a double and Becky Foley (Jamison, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) drew a bases loaded walk to cut the Army lead to 7-3 heading into the sixth inning.
Sarah Thornton scored on a wild pitch in the top of the inning, pushing the lead up to 8-3 going into the last inning of play.
Both teams earned one more run in the seventh with Army getting an RBI single from Melissa Parrish and the Leopards getting a double from Chmielowski who scored on an error by Cioffi.
Shainheit went 2-for-4 for the Leopards with a triple while Schrager also went 2-for-4.
The nightcap was a battle of defense, as both teams went scoreless through the first five innings.
Army was the first to strike in the seventh getting a solo home run from Nicki Robbins with no outs. But that would be the only run the team could muster against Lafayette as the home team answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Schrager singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error by Thornton. Chmielowski then doubled to center field, picking up the RBI and setting up Wise with no outs. Wise took advantage, knocking a double into center field, scoring Chmielowski for the lead. Wise advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Foley and scored on a Liz Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover) sacrifice fly to give the Leopards a 3-1 lead they would hold for the win.
Freshman Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) picked up the win on the mound while the Leopards handed Army ace Shauna Evans her second loss of the weekend.
