Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team was unable to come back from a 10-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Bucknell on Saturday as the Leopards dropped game two, 5-4, to the Bison in the Patriot League matchup at Lewisburg, Pa.

Brandi Porter managed to hold Lafayette (7-28, 3-11 Patriot League) to one run off four hits in game one while striking out five.

The Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, started when freshman Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberley Academy) reached base on an error by Kelly Dugan with one out. Schrager scored an unearned run when Liz Lucisano took first on a fielding error by Charity Ford.

That would be the only run of the game for the Leopards as Bucknell (15-20-2, 7-7 PL) scored three runs in the bottom of the first to steal a lead that they would not relinquish. Meredith Gill went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Bucknell while Ford went 3-for-3 with two RBI of her own. Jenna Demetriades was also 3-of-3 at the plate.

Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) (3-9) allowed 10 runs on 14 hits while striking out two in the loss.

Game two proved to be a battle of defenses through the first four innings before Lafayette managed to make the first mark on the scoreboard in the opt of the fifth. Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) drew a walk and stole second base before advancing to third on the throw. Schrager drove in the run with an RBI single to centerfield for the 1-0 Lafayette lead.

Bucknell answered in the sixth, getting all five of its runs in the inning. Demetriades drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Karen Langhauserand pick up the RBI. Fitch also drew a walk with the bases loaded for a score and Demetriades scored on a passed ball to put the Bison up 3-1. The home team added to its lead on a two RBI single by Barb Wood for a 5-1 advantage heading into the seventh.

The Leopards rallied for three runs in the last inning as Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) knocked in an RBI single and Liz Lucisano (Levittown, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) picked up an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-3. Wise later scored on a passed ball and Lucisano was called out at home on the next play to end the game, 5-4.

Lafayette continues its series with Bucknell with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
