Fischer, Lathers, Smolenski Notch Wins at Lafayette Invitational

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Junior Jim Fischer (Dumont, N.J./Bergen Catholic) won the shot put and the hammer to lead the Leopards in the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday at Metzgar Fields.

Fischer continued his breakout season, winning the shot put with a throw of 49'9.25" and the hammer with a throw of 159' 3.5". Fischer nearly won three events on his home turf, placing second in the discus with a toss of 152'6".

Fellow thrower Ethan Blose (Monroeville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also turned in a strong day, finishing second in the javelin (194'7") and fifth in the discus (136'11").

Lafayette claimed two of the distance events, as Jon Smolenski (Manor, Pa./Hempfield) won the 3,000 steeplechase (9:27.4) and Art Lathers (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township) the 3,000 meter run (8:45.9). Ken Poli (Darien, Conn./Darien) just missed making it a third distance win for Lafayette, as he finished second in the 5,000 in a time of 15:46.6.

Herb Kennedy (Troy, N.Y./Troy) recorded two third place finishes, ending the 100 in 11.00 and the 200 in 22.23. In the 400 meters, John Farkas (Oaklyn, N.J./Collinswood) placed third in 48:68.

Mark Brault (York, Maine/York ) vaulted to a second place in the pole vault with a 15'3" effort.

In the relays, Lafayette won the 4x400 meters in a time of 3:14.9.

Lafayette travels to the Penn Relays beginning on Thursday.
