LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team bounced back after dropping two games to Bucknell on Saturday to win the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, 6-3, in eight innings.
Lafayette (8-28, 4-11 PL) fell behind, 3-0, before knotting the score in the seventh inning to push it to extra innings. Erin Allison (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) singled up the middle with one out in the seventh to get things started. Heather Danchak (Clark Summit, Pa./Lakeland) pinch ran for Allison and advanced to second as Megan Longo (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock) took first based on a fielding error by Charity Ford. Stacey Brewer (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) pinch ran for Longo but the runners would hold as Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) popped up to shortstop for the second out.
The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly Academy) drew a walk to load the bases. Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa/Crestwood) hit a three-run triple to clear the bases and knot the score a 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bison (15-21-2, 7-8 PL) came up empty handed in the inning and the teams headed for the extra inning.
Liz Lucisano (Levittown, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) doubled to right field to start the inning and advanced to third on a fielding error by Jenna Demetriades, which put Liz Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover) on first base. Lucisano scored on a wild pitch while Siliato advanced to second. Allison took first on a walk and Longo reached first on a fielder's choice, as Siliato was out at third on the play. Shainheit stepped up to the plate and drilled a two-run triple to right centerfield, giving the Leopards a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the inning where they held Bucknell runless for the win.
Chmielowski went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a triple in the game while freshman pitcher Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Califon) picked up the win.
