WASHINGTON (www.lafayette.edu) - Maria Werries led four Eagles in double figures as a hot-shooting American women's basketball team ran past visiting Lafayette, 92-56, at Bender Arena on Wednesday. The Eagle victory marks the first-ever Patriot League home win for the team.
Lafayette (2-13, 0-3 PL) got out to a good start, holding a six-point lead in the first three minutes thanks to layups by Colleen Fitzpatrick, Lindsay Myers and Jennifer Bayer. The Eagles (7-8, 2-1) did not grab their first lead until halfway through the first period when Chanel Spriggs connected on a layup. The lead would change hands twice more before American took control and ended the first half on an 18-6 run.
Any hope the Leopards had of coming back from the 38-25 halftime deficit was dashed by a 13-2 American run to begin the second stanza.
The Eagles' 92 points and 55.7 percent shooting were both season highs as the team extended its series advantage over Lafayette to 7-0.
American's Chanel Hunt and Costenbader each recorded 13 points while Danielle Johnson added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Fitzpatrick led the Leopards with 13 points while Elizabeth Rojahn added 11 in the loss. Jennifer Bayer recorded a game-high nine rebounds.
Lafayette continues a four-game road swing Saturday, Jan. 19 at Army with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
