Women's Basketball Dropped By Penn, 80-63

Jan. 21, 2002

The University of Pennsylvania Women's Basketball overpowered Lafayette Monday night at The Palestra, 80-63. The Quakers' leading scorer Jewel Clark tallied 18 points while Julie Epton scored 17 and Katie Kilker added 11 points.

Lafayette tied the score at 27-27 with 5:08 left in the first half when a 5-0 run pushed the Quakers ahead for good.

Colleen Fitzpatrick, the Leopards' leading scorer, though playing on an injured ankle, still managed to knock in eight points in the first half.

In the second stanza, the Leopards still could not find their rhythm. Their frustration gave way to fouls that sent the Quakers to the line 19 times in the second half, knocking in 78 percent (15-19).

A three-point play by Kilker at 10:42 put the Red and Blue up 63-43. Samaiyah Council attempted to rally her teammates with her nine-point performance.

The Quakers also shot a season-high 40 percent (6-15) from behind the three-point arc and a season-high 46 percent (29-63) from the field.

Lafayette's Fitzpatrick finished with 16 points while freshman Ashley MacLelland notched a career-high 15 points and seven boards.

Lafayette concludes a four-game road swing on Wednesday at Navy before returning to Kirby Sports Center on Saturday to host Colgate at 1 p.m.
