EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Led by a career-high 16 points from Winston Davis, the Lafayette men's basketball team topped Navy 80-72 in a Patriot League matchup at Kirby Sports Center on Saturday. The Leopards improved to 7-5 in league action while the Midshipmen fell to 5-7.
Lafayette (13-12, 7-5) sneaked out to an 11-point lead (27-16) on a Davis three-pointer at 7:11 in the first half. Davis paced the Leopards with 13 first-half points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Navy (10-17, 5-7) responded with a Demond Shepard three-pointer to bring his team within eight, 27-19. Lafayette countered with an 18-6 run capped by two Reggie Guy free throws for the Leopards' largest lead of the game, 45-25, with 1:59 left in the first half. Navy's Scott Long made a layup and Kwame Ofori hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the Mids into the locker room, trailing 45-29.
The Leopards maintained their advantage in the second stanza, holding a double-digit lead throughout most of the half. Navy dominated the boards, 45-34, led by Francis Ebong who grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds. Ebong led four Mids in double figures with 18 points followed by Kyle Barker with 12 points. Long and Ofori each chipped in 10 points apiece.
Justin DeBerry scored 12 points and Brian Burke added 10 for the Leopards. Rob Worthington led the team with a season-high seven rebounds and five steals.
Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts league rival Lehigh (4-21, 1-11) at 7:45 p.m.
