Men's Lacrosse Dominates VMI, 10-3

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 10-3 win over the Virginia Military Institute on Saturday at Rappolt Field. Juniors Pat Lennon and Kyle McClure led the Leopards with two goals apiece.

The Keydets (1-5) led 1-0 after the first quarter after John Eddy gave VMI its only lead of the game with a tally at 6:19.

Lafayette came storming back in the second quarter to outscore VMI 3-1. Sophomore Drew Weisman notched his third goal of the year less than a minute into the second quarter. Junior Mike Fiorillo followed with an unassisted tally at 11:02. VMI's Gabe McCaig scored on an unassisted effort to bring the Keydets to within one at 10:22. Lafayette sophomore D.J. Krueger passed off to senior co-captain David Crean who scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season for a 4-2 Lafayette lead going into halftime.

The Leopards scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter for a commanding 7-2 lead. Krueger scored on an assist from Tim Derosier to open the third stanza at 14:23. Senior Ted Blackburn, Weisman and Lennon scored to give Lafayette a five-goal cushion.

Lafayette's McClure opened the fourth quarter by scoring his first two career goals with the second off an assist from defenseman Royal Tuthill. Lennon finished the scoring total with a goal assisted by Weisman with 41 seconds remaining in the game.

Senior goalie Mike Neary recorded 11 saves in goal for Lafayette while VMI's Brian Ward notched a career-high 19 saves for the Keydets.

Lafayette (1-4) outshot VMI 39-14 and picked up 44 ground balls to the Keydets' 35. VMI held the advantage in face-offs, 11-3.

The Leopards return to action on Saturday when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Patriot League foe Colgate at 1 p.m.
