Lafayette Softball Comes Up Short Versus JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a seventh-inning rally, the Lafayette softball team fell to James Madison, 6-5, in Harrisonburg, Va. on Tuesday. Lafayette scored four runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, 5-5, but the Dukes came back to score just one run in the bottom of the inning for the win. The game marked the third one-run loss suffered by the Leopards in just five games this season.

Lafayette (1-4) got on the scoreboard first in the first inning on a Kelly Wise double to right field that scored Liz Lucisano. JMU's Ashlee Schenk singled to right field to score teammate Jesse Gump to tie the game, 1-1.

The Dukes (13-9) went on to score one run in the fifth and three runs in the six inning for a 5-1 lead.

Lafayette rallied in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, 5-5. Sophomore Laura Schrager reached first on a bunt to load the bases. Junior Mara Shainheit reached on a Duke error, allowing Diane Mitchell to score. After JMU switched pitchers, Lucisano singled up the middle to score Bernotsky. Freshman Jackie Fitzgerald reached base on an error that allowed Shainheit and Schrager to score.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dukes managed to get runners in scoring position on two singles and a sacrifice bunt. Pinch runner Laura Perdew scored the winning run on a wild pitch for the 6-5 win.

Lafayette was led by Schrager who went 2-for-3 from the plate. Wise recorded two hits and an RBI while Fitzgerald batted in two RBI.

The Leopards' second game of the doubleheader was called after 4 and 1/3 innings due to darkness and rain. Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to George Mason for a doubleheader at 2:00. The team returns to College Hill on Thursday for a pair of games versus Ivy League foe Harvard at 1 p.m.
