EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Behind a solid pitching effort, the Harvard Crimson defeated Lafayette 4-0 in game one and 12-1 in game two of a doubleheader at Metzgar Field. Lafayette falls to 1-8 on the season while Harvard improved to 10-4.
In game one, Harvard struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Lauren Bettinelli scored on a wild pitch for the one-run lead. Bettinelli singled to right field and advanced to second on a Lauren Stefanchik bunt before taking third and home on a wild pitch.
The Crimson's Sarah Koppel gave Harvard a 3-0 lead on a two-run home run to center field. Teammate Breanne Cooley followed two batters later to hit a home run in virtually the same spot. Kara Brotemarkle picked up the win on the mound with 11 strikeouts, zero runs and four hits.
Sophomore Laura Schrager, junior Mara Shainheit and seniors Elizabeth Lucisano and Kelly Wise recorded hits for the Leopards while freshman pitcher Jackie Fitzgerald picked up the loss on the mound.
In game two, Harvard held a 3-1 advantage going into the fifth inning. The Crimson exploded in the fifth inning with a nine-run effort on nine hits. Koppel started the scoring with an RBI single to right field. Cooley shortly followed to rip a three-run homer to center field.
Lafayette changed pitchers as sophomore Mollie Moschberger took the mound for classmate Megan Longo. The Crimson were on a roll, however, and continued to find ways to score. Louisa Canham hit an RBI single to center field for a 9-1 advantage. Tiffany Whitton finished the scoring with a three-run homer to center field for the final 12-1 score.
Lafayette was led by Schrager with one hit and an RBI, and Becky Foley with a hit and a run on the day.
Harvard was led by Whitton who went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Cooley also went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run.
Lafayette (1-8, 0-0) opens Patriot League play on Saturday versus Colgate at 1 p.m.
