Leopard Softball Drops Pair of Games to the Raiders

The Lafayette softball team opened its Patriot League slate with a pair of losses to Colgate on Saturday at Metzgar Fields. The Leopards fell 6-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two to the Raiders.

Senior co-captain Kelly Wise got the Leopards on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one with a two-run home run to right field.

Colgate fought back to within a run in the third inning when Amanda Paolucci homered to left center. Lafayette responded with a run in the bottom of the third inning as Wise drove in her third run of the game with a single to center field that scored sophomore Laura Schrager.

Lafayette held the 3-1 lead until the top of the seventh inning when Colgate rallied to score five runs. Colgate's Melissa Rawson doubled up the middle to bring in two runs and her sister, Natalie, singled to right field to bring in two more runs.

The Leopards were led by Wise who went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI and a run, and Schrager who batted 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Elizabeth Siliato recorded the Leopards' fifth hit of the day.

In game two, Colgate led 5-0 in the third inning before the Leopards managed a run in the bottom of the inning. Mara Shainheit singled through the left side allowing junior Leigh Minarick to cross the plate.

The Raiders notched a run in both the six and seventh innings including Dorothy Donaldson's second home run of the game as Colgate went on to win, 7-1.

Shainheit went 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI while Siliato recorded the Leopards' only other hit of the game.

Lafayette fell to 1-10 overall and are 0-2 in league play. Colgate improved to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League.

Lafayette and Colgate will square off again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Metzgar Fields.
