Leopard Softball Downed By Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team dropped a doubleheader to Wagner in non-conference action in Staten Island, N.Y. on Tuesday. The Seahawks took the first game, 6-2 and shutout the Leopards in the nightcap, 2-0.

Lafayette (5-28) got off to a rough start in the first inning of game one, committing three errors and allowing five unearned runs. Wagner's Marie Bianca singled to center allowing Lynn Shortway to score. Later in the inning, the Seahawks' Katie Refsnyder hit a two-RBI double to right center field, allowing Kim Bruckner and Jessica Van Manen to cross the plate.

Wagner (22-34) added its sixth run in the third inning when Lauren Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Bruckner to score.

The Leopards staged a late rally in their final at-bat to post two runs. Senior Kelly Wise, sophomore Megan Longo and sophomore Mollie Moschberger all singled to load the bases. Junior Becky Foley reached on a Wagner error that allowed pinch runner Abby Weichert to score. Freshman Samantha Lucas made contact for a fielder's choice that allowed pinch runner Diane Mitchell to cross the plate for the Leopards' second run of the game, but it wasn't enough as Lafayette fell, 6-2.

Lafayette stepped up its' defensive effort in the nightcap, allowing just two runs, but couldn't find offensive rhythm as the Leopards recorded just two hits. Wagner's Bruckner started the second inning with a double to left field. Sanchez hit a single to advance Bruckner to third. The Seahawks' Megan Quinn scored Bruckner on a fielder's choice.

The Seahawks' added their only other run of the game in the fourth inning on a Jen James single that scored Quinn.

Wagner's Bridgette Colleran earned the win on the mound, striking out five batters and allowing just two hits. Lafayette's Amy Magos was handed the loss while fanning a batter and allowing five hits.

Lafayette (5-28) closes out the season in a Patriot League doubleheader series at Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday.
