POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team used two goals apiece by D.J. Krueger and Kyle McClure and a four-point day from Matt Prevost to notch a 10-7 win at Marist on Wednesday.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first quarter behind goals from Paul Donohue (8:48) and Brian Diele (5:28).
The second quarter was all Lafayette, as the Leopards outscored Marist 4-0. Prevost scored the Leopards' first goal of the game just 30 seconds into the second quarter off an assist from Ted Blackburn. Prevost was on the helping end of McClure's goal eight minutes later that tied the game at 2-2. Drew Weisman and David Crean tallied goals at 4:02 and 3:17 to give Lafayette a 4-2 lead at halftime.
The Leopards extended their lead to 5-2 with a goal at 12:29 in the third on an assisted score by Pat Lennon, his 14th goal of 2002. For Marist, Josh Ben-Eliyahu scored at 11:43 to make it 5-3. The Leopards then drilled home three unanswered goals, two by Krueger and one by Robert McLean to move ahead 8-3 after three quarters.
Marist outscored Lafayette 5-2 in the final session, but goals by McClure and Blackburn helped Lafayette hang on for the 10-7 win.
Prevost was the Leopards' top scorer on the day with a goal and three assists. Diele (2G, 1A) and Donohue (1G, 2A) were the top scorers for the Red Foxes.
Lafayette outshot Marist 48-22, but Marist goal Ben Gildea was able to keep the Red Foxes competitive with 23 saves. Kevin DeVito managed four saves in 60 minutes for Lafayette.
Lafayette (4-8) returns to action this weekend, hosting Drexel on Saturday.
